Author Mukhtar Ghumro is dead

He was 54. — File Photo LARKANA: Renowned poet and columnist Mukhtar Ghumro died after protracted illness in the Chandka Medical College Hospital here late Monday night. He was 54. He leaves behind wife, two sons and three daughters. He was buried in Abubakar graveyard on Airport road here on Tuesday. A large number of writers, friends and relatives attended his last rites. He suffered from paralysis in November 2007 and was bed-ridden since then. Born in a village in the Keti Mir Mohammed Ghumro area of Khairpur district on March 25, 1955, Mukhtar Ghumro began working as a clerk in Larkana Sugar Mills in 1975 and served there till 1990 when he joined the department of education as a lecturer. He was senior faculty member of the Government Degree College, Ratodero, where he taught Sindhi literature and language till 2007. Mukhtar Ghumro launched his literary career in 1975 under the guidance of Maqsood Gul, Professor Atta Mohammed Hami and Qazi Abdul Hayee Qail. His published works include Zindagi Day Mot, Sindhi translation of Krishan Chander’s short stories which he jointly did with Maqsood Gul; Chand Sitara Jholee Mein, poetry for children; and Gulan Haar, a guidebook for the students literature. His poetic anthology Sooraj Mukhee Khait is in the process of publication. Mukhtar Ghumro remained affiliated with the Sindhi Adabi Sangat, Shah Inayat Adabi Sangat, Naudero, and Sindhrri Kitabi Silsilo, Ratodero. The Sangat has lauded his contribution to Sindh literature and announced seven-day mourning. Malhar Sindhi, secretary of the literary organisation’s Ratodero chapter, Professor Lal Bakhsh Kalhoro and Professor Shamsuddin Sariyo of the Sindh Professors and Lecturers Association, Professor Dr Dur Mohammed Pathan, Mukhtiar Samo and others have condoled the death of Muhktar Ghumro.
