Hunger-strike against Port Qasim Authority
KARACHI - Score of people from Lyari on Saturday held a hunger
strike camp out side the Press Club against non-issuance of
appointment letters to them by the Port Qasim Authorities. They also
announced to continue the protest camp till their demands were to be
fulfilled
As per detail, several people set up a camp for hunger strike
against not recruiting them, though they had met the criteria for
jobs.
The participants of the camp told the media representatives that
they had applied against the advertisement published in newspapers
on October 20,2008 for vacancies at Port Qasim and 35 of them were
selected for different posts.
They further added that even they were issued medical fitness
letters from the PNS Shifa Hospital on December 21, 2008, while the
letters were submitted to the authorities concerned. Till then we
have been eyeing on issuing of our appointment letters.
The camp, led by Ubaid Rind, Javid Baloch, Dad Mohammad and others,
alleged that the ministry was biased against the people of Lyari and
wished to keep them deprived of their livelihood.
They said that five months had lapsed and they have not been given
the appointment letters. It meant that Ministry of Ports and
Shipping had cancelled these legal appointments.
Due to such non-humanitarian attitude of establishment, they decided
to go on hunger strike in front of Karachi Press Club.
They have demanded of high-ups to look into the matter and help them
to get their legal right.
The participants, carrying banners and placards with slogans for
their demands, chanted slogans against the ministry.
The participants of the camp have demanded the government to issue
their appointment letters without any discrimination, which were
cancelled by the Ministry of Ports and Shipping recently.
