MQM, ANP, others sued for 196 killings last month
KARACHI: The constitution of a larger
bench of the Sindh High Court (SHC) was prayed here on Monday to
hear a case regarding the killings of 196 citizens in Karachi in
April this year.
Filing a petition, a social worker Syed Muhammad Iqbal Kazmi
impleaded the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) Rabita Committee, Awami
National Party (ANP) provincial president, City Nazim Mustafa Kamal
and other ten officials as respondents. The petitioner maintained
that he is filing the instant public interest litigation as Article
4,5, 9, 14,23,24,25, and 29 of the Constitution of Pakistan are
being violated.
He maintained that from April 27 to May 1, more than 50 innocent
citizens were killed and the land mafia was held responsible for the
senseless killings in the city. Relying on figures collected from
different newspaper, the petitioner maintained that 196 people
including 24 children and 16 women were killed in Karachi in the
last month. Citing party wise casualty figures, the petitioner
submitted that out of 14 political activists killed in Karachi, six
belonged to the MQM, five to the ANP, two to the PML-N and one to
the PML-Functional.
He alleged that both the respondent political parties are
flourishing on linguistic basis and are violating Article 153 but no
action was ever taken against them. These political parties who are
part of coalition government of Sindh are trading statements which
fan hatred amongst people of Karachi, he stated in the petition.
The petitioner alleged that the MQM encroached upon hundreds of
acres of land in Karachi. He also alleged that workers and
supporters of the two parties are armed to the teeth as result of
which people of Karachi are shaken and have genuine major security
threats.
The petitioner prayed to the court to seek the entire record from
Sindh chief secretary, Land Utilisation member, city nazim, defunct
KDA, Karachi Port Trust, Ports and Shipping secretary, Pakistan
Railways, Katchi Abadi Authority and Registrar Cooperative Societies
of government land allegedly encroached and asked to get these lands
vacated and regularise old villages. staff report
