MQM councillor gunned down
KARACHI:
Unknown men gunned down a Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) councillor
and injured personnel of the Pakistan Army on Monday.
According to details, the incident took place at Lines Area within
the limits of Brigade police station when Zafar Ahmed, a Jamshed
Town Union Council No 9 councillor, left his house to get breakfast
while 45-year-old Abdul Rasheed, son of Mohammad Shafi, a guard of
the DMT headquarters Artillery Core 5, was on his way home after
finishing his duty at the army flats located in the area.
The police were unable to ascertain the motive behind the incident.
“It is premature to say anything about the incident and also who the
culprits’ target was as the police do not have any witnesses,” said
Jamshed Town SP Javed Akbar Riaz. He added that a Kalashnikov was
used in the incident and a case has been registered on behalf of
army officials.
Both the victims were taken to Civil Hospital, Karachi from where
the injured was shifted to PNS Shifa hospital for medical treatment.
MQM leader and Provincial Minister Syed Shoaib Bukhari and scores of
party workers reached the hospital. The minister expressed grief
over the incident and termed the incident as a conspiracy to disturb
peace in the city. The deceased was a father of four children who
was laid to rest at Sakhi Hassan graveyard.
In another incident, a 32-year-old man belonging to NWFP was shot
dead near Saba Cinema within the jurisdiction of New Karachi
Industrial Area police station. The deceased received three bullet
wounds and died on the spot. His body was taken to Abbasi Shaheed
Hospital from where his family took it away before legal formalities
were completed. DSP Taufeeq Khan said that the incident happened
when the deceased, namely Ashraf, son of Abdul Rasheed was sitting
at his cement depot where two men came, riding a motorcycle and shot
him with a TT pistol after asking his name. The deceased was
residing in Pakhtoonabad, Sharah-e-Noor Jahan since the 20 years.
The DSP did not believe that Asharaf’s murder was part of the
current wave of ethnic violence but believed that it is possible
that he was killed on an old enmity. A case has been registered
against unidentified men.
Meanwhile, Imran Masih, 13, who sustained bullet injuries during a
clash between two groups in Taiser Town recently, succumbed to his
injuries on Monday while he was undergoing treatment in a hospital.
