Shutterdown paralyses life across province
By: Zamir Sheikh
KARACHI - Complete
shutter-down strike was observed in the interior of Sindh on Monday
on the call of Sindh United Party (SUP) in protest against the
influx of internally displaced persons (IDPs) into the province and
over the murder of its activist, Akhtar Shah, who was killed near
Hyderabad Toll Plaza a few days back.
All nationalist parties and groups in the province fully supported
the strike call. However, partial strike was also observed in
non-Sindhi areas of Hyderabad and Latifabad where some shopping
centres remained opened.
Vehicular traffic remained thin on main thoroughfares of Hyderabad
while the number of inter-city buses plying on National High way and
Super Highway was also negligible. In Jamshoro and Kotri, all
business activities remained suspended. The ongoing semester
examinations of Sindh University were also affected as students
could not reach their exam centres due to the non-availability of
transport.
Protesters, urging the people to observe shutter-down strike against
the influx of IDPs, were also distributed on this occasion.
Activists of various nationalist parties brought out processions,
staged sit-ins and burnt tyres at Badin Bus Stop, Fatah Chowk, Tando
Yousuf and adjoining areas.
Reports said that complete shutter-down strike was observed in
Jamshoro, Sannh, Manjhand, Lakha and other areas while police
rounded up a number of SUP leaders and activists during raids at
their houses.
District administrations had made strict security arrangements to
avert any untoward incident.
Reports said that complete strike was also observed in Larkana,
Qambar, Shahdadkot, Mirpur Mathelo, Sukkur and Kandhkot. However, no
untoward incident was reported from any area.
