Sindh’s elite always act as agents of invaders: scholar
Sindh has been attacked many times and the conquerors were least interested in the history or culture as their only objective was to loot and plunder resources, lamented Dr Mubarak Ali Khan. - Dawn/File photo HYDERABAD: Noted historian Dr Mubarak Ali Khan has said that tribal chieftains and feudal lords have always acted as the agents and brokers of the conqueror and even this day they are with the ruling clique, deceiving and oppressing the Sindhi people. Delivering a lecture on ‘The future of Sindh in the backdrop of its history’ at Taraqqi Pasand House, Dr Mubarak stressed that a conqueror, however powerful he might be, could never succeed in his nefarious designs without the help of local traitors, brokers and agents. He laid emphasis on rewriting history of Sindh from the point of view of people. The British writers had distorted Sindh’s history and given a wrong impression as if Sindhis had been living in dark ages and they had no history or culture before the advent of British rule, he said. He said that the British historians had also given the impression that the Indians were simply incapable of governing themselves. But the excavations at Moenjodaro in 1920 proved the British wrong because the archaeological evidence proved beyond doubt that Sindh had thousands of years old history and its people had a superior culture even 5,000 years ago, he said. The discovery of Moenjodaro had played a very important role in sparking movements for the liberation of Sindh; the scholar said and added that it had introduced culture and living standard of Sindhi nation to the world. There were two opinions about the history of Sindh that it started from Moenjodaro and that it started from the advent of Arabs, Dr Mubarak said. However, he himself believed that the religion should be kept separate from history. Sindh had been attacked from outside on many occasions and the conquerors were least interested in the history or culture of the conquered as their only objective was to loot and plunder resources, he said. The conqueror always builds colonies to perpetuate his control, the scholar said and referred to the Arghoons, the Torkhans and other outsiders. It was the need of the hour for Sindhis to awaken to ground realities without which they would achieve nothing, Dr Mubarak said. He pointed out that the ruling clique was always afraid of any changes in history because they would expose their corrupt practices. The poignant irony is that only history of rulers had been written and role of masses has been completely deleted from all histories, he said and added that they are the masses, the workers and the peasants who create history.Unless history was written from the point of view of the masses, the truth would always remain hidden, he said. Earlier, the scholar was welcomed by STP chairman Dr Qadir Magsi. A large number of party workers and intellectuals attended the lecture. Source:Dawn.com By Aziz Malik Thursday, 30 Apr, 2009
