KARACHI: A wave of violence emanating from rivalries between
political factions in the provincial capital continued to spread as
12 more people fell victim to target killings on Monday.
The number of political activists to have fallen victim to target
killings during the first week of June has reached 35, and there are
fears that street clashes might erupt.
MQM-H: Around four Mohajir Qaumi Movement-Haqiqi (MQM-H) workers
were killed in various incidents.
In Gulbahar area, at least three people were killed. SHO Fasihuddin
said eight men on motorbikes – armed with Kalashnikovs – shot at two
MQM-H workers, Abdul Naeem and Irfan. As a result, Naeem and two
passers-by – including a seven-year-old boy – were killed. The
targeted workers also had links with the Pakistan People’s Party,
said the SHO.
Elsewhere, the body of MQM-H worker Amir Zaib Nasir was found in
Landhi area.
Unknown motorcyclists targeted and killed the MQM-H’s Zahid Elahi
(32) in Awami Colony. Fahimuddin (40) – also an MQM-H activist – was
shot dead by two men on a motorbike in Liaquatabad.
MQM: At least two members of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) were
killed in separate incidents.
Former MQM-H worker Saifullah Siddiqui (35) who had joined the MQM
was shot dead by motorcyclists in Nazimabad. The MQM’s Khawaja
Sibtain (42) was shot dead in Azizabad.
Also, four other people were killed in separate incidents. Police
are claiming these four killings were a result of personal enmities.
Police sources said the Sindh Home Department has warned senior
police officials that they would be suspended if further target
killings were reported in their jurisdictions.
The prime minister has strongly condemned the target killings.
