LAHORE: In a flagrant display of flouting ban on its activities, hundreds of Hizbul Tehrir activists on Sunday held a rally in protest against the Malakand army operation and the presence of US forces in the region.

The police learned of the march and checked it only after the activists got close to the Civil Secretariat and then police arrested scores of the activists as well as bystanders.

The outfit dodged the police by changing the rally’s starting point from Nasser Bagh to Chauburji roundabout. As police officials were manning Nasser Bagh up to The Mall, the activists walked from Chauburji roundabout to the Civil Secretariat without any hurdle. The police intercepted them near the secretariat when a speaker was concluding the rally. The police resorted to baton charge and arrested many activists, including bystanders, especially those having beards suspecting them to be members of the Hizb. The arrested people were taken to Islampura police station.City Division SP Rana Abdul Jabbar told Dawn that more than 80 activists of the organisation had been taken into custody under the Anti-Terrorist Act that proscribes any banned outfit to hold public activities.
