‘Terror must end on both sides of the border’
KARACHI: Indian activist and the
author of ‘The God of small things’ and winner of Booker’s prize
Arundhati Roy said that religious extremist elements in India and
Pakistan have terrified the masses by slaughtering people and such
terror activities must end in both countries.
Talking to the media at the Karachi Press Club, she said that
Taliban in Pakistan and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) are only a
facade and the so-called democratic countries which are selling arms
to the sub continent are behind them. She opposed the construction
of dams in India and Pakistan and said that by constructing dams,
both governments are snatching water from the poor and handing it
over to rich people on both sides. “The water is for human
consumption but by constructing dams, both the governments want to
use it for industrial purposes and that is unethical as well as
against the environment and economy,” she said.
She said that the glaciers are melting due to the use of heavy arms
on both side. “The role of media has remained unconstructive in both
countries and it must play a positive role,” she went to on say.
When she was asked about the name of her next novel, she said that
it was a secret.
