ISLAMABAD: Chief of the Army Staff General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani on Thursday observed that the tide in Swat had decisively turned against the terrorists, as organised resistance by militants was dying down at a fast pace.

Presiding over the Corps Commanders’ Conference at General Headquarters, he said that major population centers and roads leading to the valley have been largely cleared, and high value targets were being aggressively pursued. However, the army would continue to carry out limited operations and isolated incidents of violence will continue to take place and will have to be managed.

The COAS praised the security force’s professionalism and bravery, and maintained that the Army will stay in Swat to provide security to the people. Official sources told Dawn that the Army may stay in Swat for six months to one year even after the completion of the operation.

He paid tribute to the sacrifices of the internally displaced persons (IDPs) in sustaining the difficulties for the sake of peace and stability in their homeland. Holding out an assurance that the IDPs will not be left in lurch at this critical time, he urged all to work hand in glove to garner maximum support for the relief and rehabilitation.

General Kayani expressed hope that the Government will be able to immediately launch a robust administrative effort on the heels of a successful military operation, making it possible for the IDPs to return as soon as possible. He stressed that a civilian administrative surge was required for creating a conducive environment for the return of IDPs. The General said that the Army would provide whatever assistance is required and no effort will be spared towards this end.

Addressing a question about relief work by the army, Kayani said five trucks carrying 25 tons of rations had been dispatched for stranded people of Khawzakhela. So far 105 tons of relief items have been sent to Khawzakhela and Alpurai, while 185 tons have been dispatched to Chakdara and Mingora. Another 1,350 Kgs of rations were dispatched for the IDPs of Kalam by Army helicopters.

The ISPR also announced establishment of a Relief Fund for the displaced persons of Malakand Division by the Pakistan Army and said all those who wished may donate at:
