MQM proposes IDPs stay in Punjab
KARACHI:
MQM Rabita Committee’s senior London-based member Anees Advocate
proposed on Sunday that the IDPs of the Malakand agency should be
settled either in their own province, NWFP, or in Punjab.
“The IDPs entry into Sindh will create a law and order situation in
the province,” Anees argued in his statement. He said that Sindh
should not be considered an international orphanage because it was
already overcrowded by refugees.
“It is being witnessed that the majority of the displaced people
have come to Sindh even though they could have settled in other
parts of NWFP or in Punjab,” he said.
He said that if the IDPs’ settle in their own province or in Punjab,
it will be in their own interest. He said for these reasons, the MQM
supported the stance of the Jeay Sindh Qaumi Mahaz (JSQM) and
questioned the prime minister as to why these IDPs were not allowed
to settle in Punjab.
“MQM has earlier demanded that the IDPs be registered and then
settled in special camps. The Pakistan Army has informed the
government that the Taliban are also fleeing disguised as IDPs,” he
cited.
The MQM member said that the influx of hundreds of thousands of IDPs
into Sindh would change the demography and permanent residents have
a right to object to their arrival in view of the bitter experiences
of the past. staff report
