PU lecturer to participate
in Nobel Laureates meeting

PUNJAB University Institute of Chemistry Lecturer Muhammad Imran has
been selected for participation in 59th Nobel Laureates meeting
scheduled to be held from 26th June to 8th July 2009 at Lindau, Germany.
The Nobel Laureate meeting is an annual function at Lindau in various
subjects like Physics and Medicine. The turn of Chemistry subject comes
after 5 years. In this 59th meeting, Nobel Prize holders in chemistry
will gather at Lindau, Germany.
In the first step, Higher Education Commission invited applications from
Pakistani young scholars below 35 age from all four provinces including
FATA and Kashmir followed by highly competitive interview conducted at
HEC Islamabad. These interviews were conducted by selection board of
subject experts and other technical members. This selection board
nominated 10 young scholars from all over the Pakistan. Final selection
was made by Scientific Review Panel of the Lindau Council after
evaluation of applications. The council selected six young scholars from
Pakistan including Punjab University Lecturer Muhammad Imran. In this
event, young scholars of 60 countries are going to participate.
PU wins trophy: The Punjab University has won the Team Trophy in
Expedition 09 organized by Pakistan Institute of Engineering and Applied
Sciences (PIEAS) Islamabad on May 22-24, 2009.
The PU got first positions in Urdu Mushaira, Urdu Essay and Story
Writing, English Essay and Story Writing, Sketch and Painting, Bilingual
Declamation, Photography (Colored), Photography (Black and White), All
Rounder and Documentary and Singing. Moreover, the PU got second
position in Mime and 3rd position in Drama competition. The Punjab
University team was also awarded with Team Trophy in year 2008.
In another Bilingual Declamation, Punjab University College of Pharmacy
student Shamaoon Ahmad got first position in English Declamation. This
contest was organized by NFC College of Engineering, Faisalabad, from
May 20-21, 2009.
PU sets up relief camp: A twenty three-member medical and relief team of
Punjab University, with medicines and other relief goods worth one
million rupees, has set up a relief camp at Shah Mansoor, District
Sawabi, where Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) from Sawat, Buner and
Malakand have been settled.
On the first day of the relief camp, the senior doctors of the team
examined many ailing people, including children and women. Two lady
doctors of PU health centre are also accompanying the team. The doctors
gave treatment to the ailing people and provided medicines.
IJT demands student-friendly PU budget: The Punjab University chapter of
the Islami Jamiat Talaba (IJT) said that the PU budget to be presented
next month must be student-friendly and special funds must be allocated
for the solution of students’ problems.
According to a press release here on Wednesday, IJT PU Nazim Qaiser
Sharif while addressing to the education committee said that the PU
administration had commercialised the varsity’s land by permitting
projects of various private companies but no direct benefit of this
commercialisation was given to the students.
He said there were high tuition and hostel fees, favouritism played role
in scholarships, the facility of hostel was not available for afternoon
students, and the PU buses were not sufficient to cater for the large
number of students.
Three vehicles added to PU fleet: Three new vehicles of the fleet of
Punjab University Examination Branch.
According to a press release here on Wednesday, the vehicles will be use
for delivering question papers and collecting answer sheets from
different examination centres of the university. Examination Controller
Prof Zahid Karim, Additional Controller Muhammad Zaheer and Resident
Officer Shahid Gill were also present.
