Radical steps urged to change Thana culture

 LAHORE:

SPEAKERS at a seminar “Vigilance Committees and Thana Culture Reforms” stress upon the need of drastic measures to reform the Thana culture.

The interactive moot was held at the Punjab University, which launched a stage to get feedback form different segments of society before implementing this programme, as announced by the Punjab chief minister recently.

The speakers suggested that highly qualified people including university and college teachers should be included in the vigilance committees.

According to a press statement, Punjab Education Minister Mujtaba Shuja ur Rehman addressing the seminar said, “The credit of free courts goes to Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif and now our other institutions will also become strong and free of despotism”.

Senator Pervaiz Rasheed, MPA Khawaja Imran Nazir, Lahore District Bar Association former President Manzoor Qadir, PU VC Prof Dr Mujahid Kamran, Additional Registrar Dr Aurangzeb Alamgir and law, political science, history and science students were present.

The minister said PU was the biggest university of the country and suggestions of its students would be considered before these committees were set up.

He said the CM would monitor these committees and only well-respected and educated people would be their members.

Speaking on the occasion, PU VC Prof Dr Mujahid Kamran requested the CM to help PU teachers to get their PhD degrees, saying PhD teachers’ ratio was very low in the university. He said that CM should make PU his centre of governance and use this platform to bring about positive changes in the province and society.

Manzoor Qadir said that these committees should be based on impartiality with proper check and balance on them.

Students opined that the committees be empowered to questions SHOs while a helpline be set up for the people.

Most of the speakers viewed that influential of any area should not be included in the Vigilance Committees rather educated people be preferred.
