Separation of Governor and Chancellor offices demanded

- Federation of All Pakistan Universities Academic Staff Association
(FAPUASA) has demanded 4 per cent increase in education sector in
the upcoming budget, more funding for higher education and
separation of office of Governor and Chancellor.
These recommendations were adopted at a general body meeting of
FAPUASA at the Punjab University under the chairmanship of Prof
Kalimullah Warraich, President of the Federation.
FAPUASA called for appointment of Vice Chancellors, Pro Vice
Chancellors amongst the in-service academicians, appointment of HEC
chairman amongst the university teachers, its (HEC) audit and
down-sizing in order to divert funds on research in universities. It
also called for increase in the retirement age of university
teachers by 65 years.
The meeting of the Federation was attended by members of Academic
Staff Associations of all public sector universities in the country.
A 17-point demand draft was prepared for implementation failing
which the university teachers will stage protest demonstrations on
June 10 outside press clubs in major cities.
The FAPUASA will also hold a rally in August and a higher education
convention at Islamabad in October followed by a demonstration in
front of the Parliament building.
Giving details of the recommendations, President FAPUASA Prof
Kalimullah, Secretary Prof Badr Soomro and Prof Dr Saeed Nagra, Dr
Shakeel Farooqi of University of Karachi, Prof Raza Ali Khan of NED
University Karachi, Dr Mumtaz Salik, former President of the
Federation and President ASA Punjab University told reporters that
the meeting expressed grave concerns over cut in universities
budgets and demanded restoration and release of the approved budget.
