US ambassador stresses need to protect shared culture
LAHORE: US Ambassador Anne W Patterson has stressed the need to “protect shared cultural heritage” on a visit to the Lahore Fort’s Alamgiri Gate, marking the completion of another US- funded conservation project on Wednesday. “Every time I come to the Lahore Fort, I am amazed by its magnificent architecture,” the ambassador said after being received by Punjab Archaeology Department Director Shahbaz Khan. “The Alamgiri Gate is truly an emblem of Lahore. It is a beautiful and historic gateway to Lahore’s past,” she said. The Ambassador’s Fund for Cultural Preservation provided a $31,834 grant to the Punjab Archaeology Department to help restore the facade of the Alamgiri Gate using architectural techniques and materials similar to those utilised during the original construction. The ambassador felt the restoration would ensure that this “important national symbol survives for future generations”. She remarked that it also signified the broad-based nature of the US-Pakistan bilateral relationship. The chief US envoy appreciated the Punjab Archaeology Department for its “painstaking attention to detail” in carrying out the project, which was initiated in 2007.
