Nawaz Sharif contesting for NA-123
Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) chief Nawaz Sharif is among the
candidates of NA-123, a private TV reported Thursday. District
Returning Officer Qamaruz Zaman said there are five other
independent candidates contesting for the National Assembly seat in
constituency of NA-123 in addition to the PML-N chief. The PML-N
sources said that the independent candidates are being contacted and
it is quite possible that Nawaz Sharif is elected unopposed.(The

Wall-chalking goes on unbridled
By: Yasir Habib Khan
LAHORE - Despite
complete ban, massive wall-chalking is going on in full swing in the
constituency of NA-123, from where PML-N chief Mian Nawaz Sharif is
set to contest by-election after regaining his eligibility through
apex court.
PML-N has started painting the walls in sheer violation of Punjab
prohibition expressing matter on walls Act 1995. The walls are full
with messages and slogans in praise of Nawaz Sharif. The date for
the by-poll is awaited and could be announced by the election
commission any time.
One can witness all walls either side of Allama Iqbal Road and Gari
Shahu flyover with graffiti as a part of beginning of preparations
of the election for two times prime minister Nawaz Shairf to get him
elected as unopposed. PML-N Lahore secretary general Mian Mujtaba
Shujaur Rehman had already been elected unopposed in by-poll from
PP-141, provincial constituency of the NA-123 during February 18
elections.
But the publicity practices followed by the PML (N) so far hardly
sit well with the local people. “The Sharifs acts and deeds do not
match with what they say. They talk of law and its supremacy. When
some thing goes in their favour whether illegal, they look the other
way,” said many local people during a survey.
They were of the opinion that graffiti had been banned by elections
commission. As such all political leaders should avoid violation of
the rules including the Sharifs. Some spectators criticised the
graffiti for spoiling the beauty of the city.
With by-election approaching closer, no other political party
started wall chalking except PML-N. The City District Government is
responsible to ensure implementation of the Punjab wall-chalking Act
1995, but it is unmoved so far.
Lahore is the hometown of Nawaz Sharif. He was denied the
opportunity to fight the general elections from NA-123 on February
18 alongside with his brother Mian Shahbaz Sharif. Party leader
Makhdoom Javed Hashmi won the polls from NA-123 and then vacated
this seat. In the constituency NA-123 (Lahore-VI), the registered
votes are 288994 and the average turnout is 33.80%.(The Nation: June

PML-N working
for unopposed Nawaz victory

LAHORE: The Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) has stepped up
efforts to get party chief Nawaz Sharif elected unopposed to the
National Assembly (NA) from the NA-123 constituency in Lahore.
The Election Commission has not announced a date NA-123 by-elections
as yet, but the PML-N has begun contacting other candidates from the
constituency. A party office-bearer requesting anonymity told Daily
Times on Thursday that the PML-N wanted to get Nawaz elected
unopposed from the constituency, adding that the party believed this
was possible since his opponents were not very popular.
Also, the party would have the support of the Pakistan People’s
Party (PPP), which has announced that it will not field any
candidate against Nawaz. PML-N Punjab General Secretary Raja Ashfaq
Sarwar said the unopposed election of Nawaz would strengthen
democracy and have a positive impact on the country’s politics.
The PML-N’s Javed Hashmi had won the NA-123 seat in the 2008
election, but vacated it after winning from his ancestral
constituency in Multan. Nawaz had later filed his nomination papers
to contest the by-election from NA-123, but the independent Noor
Elahi challenged his candidature in the Lahore High Court (LHC).(Daily
