Scions of political families occupy important positions in Federation, Punjab

LAHORE: Members of many political families of the Punjab either occupy important positions in the bureaucracy of federation and Punjab or have close relations through marriages with families of bureaucrats and police officers. Some civil and police officers have a prominent role in the success of their family members.
The honesty and impartiality of a number of senior bureaucrats and police officers in the federation or provinces is above board, therefore such officers of political families have been performing their duties creditably, no matter who held the reins of power. Nonetheless the way of their public dealing and contacts with the people have definitely, even though indirectly, benefited the political personalities of their families. On the other hand, many of these officers and bureaucrats have mostly suffered in case some of the family members become members of assembly, or minister or adviser.
Bureaucrats and police officers in Punjab who are currently connected with political families through marital relations or otherwise include Chaudhry Zulfikar Ali Cheema, DIG, RPO Sheikhupura, and Dr Nisar Ahmad Cheema, Director General Health Punjab, both are brothers of PML-N MNA from Gujranwala Justice (R) Iftikhar Ali Cheema. Secretary Interior Khawaja Siddique Akbar is a cousin of PML-N MNA and former federal minister Khawaja Mohammad Asif. Captain (R) Tahir Sarfaraz Awan, Secretary Social Welfare Department Punjab, is the husband of PML-Q MNA and former woman minister Sumera Malik. He is also the nephew of former minister Malik Naeem Awan, brother of Farhana Afzal, MPA from Punjab, and also the brother-in-law of former MNA Aaila Malik.
Additional IG Punjab Zafar Abbas Lak (currently IG Motorway) is the son-in-law of former MNA from Gujrat Chaudhry Tajammul Hussain and also brother-in-law of former MNA Chaudhry Mubashir Hasan. Prior to that Zafar Abbas Lak was DG FIA. He is brother-in-law of Tanzeela Aamir, MNA from Sargodha, and is ‘Ham Zulf’ (husband of the sister of the wife) of former minister Aamir Sultan Cheema.
Director General NAB Punjab Khurshid Anwar Bhinder, and Deputy Director FIA Lahore are both sons of former senator and speaker Chaudhry Mohammad Anwar Bhinder. Both these officers are also the cousins of former minister Shahid Akram Bhinder. SSP Saeed Akhtar Bharwana is the brother of Saima Akhtar Bharwana, MNA, from Jhang and son of former provincial minister Mehr Akhtar Abbas Bharwana. DIG Maj (R) Mubashiullah is the brother-in-law of former federal minister Chaudhry Aitzaz Ahsan and also the son-in-law of former President Justice (R) Mohammad Rafiq Tarar. Nazir Saeed Ansari and Abid Saeed Ansari, respectively, Member Board of Revenue, and provincial secretary, both are the nephews of Barrister Usman Ibrahim, MNA from Gujranwala. Qazi Khalid Saeed, a senior bureaucrat, is the brother-in-law of the two brothers.
Presently Manager Pakistan Cricket Board and prior to that Punjab Secretary Excise and Taxation Naveed Akram is the a nephew of Bashir Mahmood Virk, MNA from Gujranwala, and also a nephew of former provincial minister Shah Nawaz Cheema. Federal Secretary Malik Mushtaq Awan is the son-in-law of former provincial minister Malik Saleem Iqbal from Talagang. Fazeel Akbar, DCO Nankana Sahib, (formerly Chairman CDA Islamabad) is the cousin of former senator from Rahimyar Khan Shafqat Mahmood Chaudhry. SSP Ishaq Jehangir is the son-in-law of former MNA and federal minister Rai Mansab Khan Kharal. SSP Mohammad Ali Neokara is the son-in-law of Lt Gen (R) Mohammad Saleem Malik, brother of Malik Naeem Awan, former MNA from Sargodha. Retired IG Police Punjab and currently Secretary to President of Pakistan Malik Asif Hayat is the son of the late senator Mohammad Hayat Khan, who is uncle of Malik Naeem Awan. Assistant Commissioner Rana Shakeel Aslam is the son of DIG (R) Mohammad Aslam Khan who is the cousin of Speaker Rana Iqbal Khan from Kasur.
Director General Local Government and Urban Development Punjab Sheheryar Sultan, and his brother SSP Shehzada Sultan are sons of former District Nazim and retired federal secretary Sahibzada Hameed Sultan. He is nephew of former federal minister Nazir Sultan and they belong to Sultan Bahu family of Garh Maharaja from Jhang.
Rana Mansoor Khan, SSP, is the son-in-law of Rana Nazir Ahmad Khan, MNA, from Gujranwala while his ‘Samdhi’ (son-in-law or daughter-in-law’s father) DIG Rana Mohammad Aslam Khan are both retired. Former MNA Rana Umar Aziz, son of Rana Nazir Ahmad Khan, and DIG Lahore are Ham Zulf (their wives are sisters). DPO Attock SO Ali Nasir Rizvi (who was previously DPO Vehari) is the son of retired provincial secretary Syed Tajammul Hussain Rizvi and nephew of former provincial minister from Sialkot Syed Akhtar Hussain Rizvi. Deputy Director FIA Lahore Nasir Jameel is brother of former federal minister from Narowal Tariq Anis and of Col (R) Abbas. Fateh Sher Joya has retired as DIG. He is a cousin of former senator from Sheikhupura Chaudhry Naeem Hussain Chattha. Member Punjab Assembly Athar Gorchani is the brother of DIG Police Akhtar Khan Gorchani. Rao Amin Hashim who has retired as IG Balochistan is the son of late Rao Hashim, MNA, from Pakpattan and brother of former Nazim Pakpattan district Rao Naseem Hashim.
SSP CIA Lahore Chaudhry Umar Virk is the brother of former MNA from Sheikhupura Saeed Virk and cousin of MNA Bilal Virk. Malik Aziz, SSP, breathed his last two weeks ago after he suffered heart attack, was the brother-in-law of former deputy chairman Senate Malik Mohammad Ali and brother of former MPA Haji Sardar Khan.
DPO Sahiwal Rana Ayaz Khan is a cousin of provincial minister from Faisalabad Rana Sanaullah Khan. Khawaja Imran, who was Personal Staff Officer to the CM Punjab, and now has been assigned an important responsibility in LDA, the cousin of both former minister Khawaja Saad Rafiq, MNA, and Khawaja Salman Rafiq, MPA.
Deputy Director FIA Faisalabad Sohail Awan is the son of former MNA from Sheikhupura Malik Arif Awan and nephew of former provincial minister Malik Mushtaq Awan. Additional Director FIA is son of former federal minister Mian Yasin Wattoo, and nephew of MPA Moeen Wattoo. Sajjad Mustafa Bajwa who was Director FIA (and nowadays is deputed in Pakistan Embassy in Canada) is the son of former MNA Ghulam Mustafa Bajwa. Commissioner Bahawalpur Mohammad Khan Khichi belongs to the political family of Vehari. Aftab Ahmad Khichi has been an MNA.
